Frequently asked questions
What is a corporate carbon footprint?
The carbon footprint quantifies the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG), namely carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), which are released into the atmosphere due to companies’ activities or a specific process.
What role does the carbon footprint play in climate change?
A company’s carbon footprint plays an essential role in climate change, as it is directly related to the increase in the concentration of GHGs in the atmosphere, which contribute to global warming and in turn to the acceleration of climate change.
Why is it important to calculate the carbon footprint?
(2) Reducing operating costs: typically reducing consumption and optimizing processes with a view to reducing GHG emissions has an impact on reducing operating costs;
(3) Promoting innovation: the search for alternatives with lower emissions can encourage change and innovation within an organization.
What are the main sources of carbon emissions in a corporate carbon footprint?
The main sources of emissions are:
– Purchase of goods and services;
– Consumption of fossil fuels for steam production and heating;
– Electricity consumption;
– Consumption of fossil fuels in the fleet;
– Livestock
How are GHG emissions organized?
The broadcasts are organized into 3 areas:
Scope 1, which corresponds to direct emissions arising from activities that occur from sources owned or controlled by the company, namely:
- Fuel consumption on the premises (cooking, air conditioning, water heating)
- Fuel consumption in the company fleet
- Leakage of refrigeration gases (gases that make up air conditioners, freezers, etc.)
- Fertilizer application
Scope 2, which corresponds to indirect emissions related to the purchase of electricity.
Scope 3, which corresponds to indirect emissions arising from activities related to the value chain, namely:
- Purchase of goods and services (materials, water consumption, consultancy services);
- Transportation of goods;
- Transportation of products sold;
- Employee travel (home-work-home);
- Business trips;
- Treatment of waste produced in the company;
What documents should I have with me when I start calculating my carbon footprint?
- Annual energy consumption bills (electricity, natural gas, diesel, LPG and others)
- Annual water bills
- Documents proving the purchase of raw materials (e.g. quantity purchased, cost, origin, supplier, etc.)
- A record of the fleet’s fuel consumption or kilometers (km) traveled (e.g. documents showing the kilometers traveled so far in the company vehicle)
